If you live in the Midwest, you’re probably familiar with Hy-Vee chain of grocery stores. They have an absolutely marvelous meat counter with all kinds of grab & cook options. My folks love their burgers along with quite a few of the options there. Me? I’m all about the Salmon Burgers. The only problem for cheap lil’ ol’ me? The price. And it’s not that the prices are outlandish, it’s just that they are a lot more than homemade options.

First of all, a disclaimer. This spectacular salad, the Taphouse Salad with Roasted Tomatoes, Mushrooms & Smashburger, was stolen – or at least the idea of it was. This is my version of a Taphouse Salad, inspired by the bourbon, beer & burger pub in Sioux Falls, Taphouse 41. If you’re in Sioux Falls, you need to get yourself there asap!

The Juicy Lucy (or Jucy Lucy), the iconic cheese-stuffed burger, is a Minnesota thing, you betcha! Two rival Minnesota bars, Matt’s and the 5-8 Tavern, have been making these for decades, but recently, the Juicy Lucy has gone all gourmet. There’s something about a great, crusty burger with an ooey, gooey, cheesy filling that puts all other cheeseburgers to shame. This Juicy Lucy Ultimate Cheese Stuffed Burger definately does.

Diners, Drive Ins & Dives is on Netflix this season and this episode features the Sparrow Tavern in Astoria, New York – a run down rock & roll type bar with gourmet style. One of their star items was the Sparrow Veggie Burger and even the carnivores were going on about it. After I made them, I can see why – they’re flippin’ AWESOME! A bit of work, but the best Veggie Burger I’ve ever had!
