Smokin’ Chipotle Taco Seasoning

Smokin' Chipotle Taco Seasoning: The best home-made taco seasoning!

Some of you guys might know I’m a little bit obsessive about my various spices, mixes and concoctions. I have quite a few Spice Mixes & Blends on my blog because if you have spices you can make almost anything. This Smoky Chipotle Taco Seasoning is one of my newer favorites.

I even have a more Basic Taco Seasoning already…but over the years I’ve found myself adding a bit of this and a bit of that to really bring my taco flavoring home and I think I now have this perfected! As far as flavor goes, it seems I always want more, more, more!

The Smoky Chipotle Taco Seasoning has a good amount of heat, but keep in mind that by the time you’ve piled all your taco meat into a shell or tortilla and smothered it all with cheese and/or your favorite fixings, the heat does dissipate a bit. Just use your good judgement if serving children or the spice wary.

  • Servings: 1/2 cup
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

  • 1 tablespoons onion flakes or dehydrated onion
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon basic chile powder
  • 1 tablespoon chipotle chile powder or another individual chile powder with a heat level you are comfortable with. Ancho is nice.)
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch *
  • 2 teaspoons cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper or chili pequin
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano or Mexican oregano, optional

Mix together. Makes a little more than 1/2 cup.

Use 2 1/2 to 3 tablespoons (this amount equals a 1 1/4 ounce seasoning packet) per one pound of browned and drained ground beef. Push the ground beef to the edges of the pan and toss the taco seasoning into the center. Toast for a minute in the skillet, then add 1/2 to 3/4 cup of water, mix everything together and simmer several minutes to desired consistency.

Multiply as desired.

* Helps to thicken so the spices adhere to the meat & helps to keep the mixture from hardening and clumping while storing)

  2. I was putting together some spice blends to bottle up as gifts this holiday season – and then I realized that the two “Mexican” home-made spices both come from you! So that explains why they are similar and that we love them so much. You get all the credit!

    • Where my folks are in SD I have to bring them from the Twin Cities – and it’s hard to find anything like chipotle powder. I just tried a little method where you lay a few chiles on a paper towel and microwave them for 15 seconds instead of toasting them in a pan, then proceed with cooling and grinding for powder or soaking for a recipe and it worked great! Much easier than toasting them in a pan because I’m likely to forget for those few crucial seconds and burn them. I swear I have adult add…

      • Thank you so much ❤I hadn’t remembered at all until now feeling overwhelmed! I red little Red hen too .. My children are dyslexic and I suppose I am as well! I didn’t realise what I’ve been doing! Here’s to cooking and learning about friends.. blogging ! Thank goodness for cooking and family living !!❤

        • Oh gosh, you have a lot on your plate – No pun intended & I love your icons! ! And blogging started out with me being something I did and then at some point, I turned a corner and went native and it became a part of what I am. I went from someone who blogs to a “blogger” I guess!

And the people I meet and chat with have become friends and offered so much support, and not just with my blog but with my life over the years, strange as it might seem. 🙂

          • Don’t worry.. I’m very thankful for your support ! It’s good, I really enjoy the conversation and appreciate your informative thinking! There’s one thing about putting thoughts and opinions out into the space out here it’s so helpful without any preconceived ideas! I’m very new to blogging but can see the fantastic supportive world it is ! Can’t wait for the journey.. 🌎 sorry had to do it ! 🤣

  3. I’ll admit, taco seasoning is one of the few spice mixes I actually buy still. I definitely need to change my ways! The worst part is I probably have all of these spices too!

    • I always have to look around places for the Chipotle but everything else I have and most of them I have big jars of. Besides, you guys do a lot of barbecuing in the summer, so I’m guessing you have the same. I just run through Chili powder & paprika! 🙂 I could buy it by the case, lol!

Hun,I LOVE your seasoning mixes!I have been doing this for YEARS!Is so much healthier(usually);more importantly TASTES so much better!Far less expensive in the long run.I must do a search on bulk spices.Used to make my own potpourri years ago.A company called The Sanfrancisco Herb Co. sold awesome hers and spices in bags.Botanicals, many of which are edible.Anyway, thanks sweetie!🤗

    • Hi Teri – I can see you get it. It’s hard to price out exactly because so many variables depending on what you buy and where but when you’re talking any “packets” a buck fifty or so (or more) a piece is really super pricey. I’m estimating it runs about 5 to 6 times the amount if you made your own. And if you’re talking about any of the specialty type brand name blends that are in jars lining the shelves around the spices then it really adds up.

But the quality & the of the home-made and the opportunity to fine tune it into your own special blend really makes a difference in my cooking. 🙂

I haven’t done potpourri in years – I’m going to have to get on it this year!

    • I have GOT to check that out and see if there are other options around here besides just pineapple. I’m sure there is. My daughter just asked me to come up with easy oatmeal mixes for her like our commercial Quaker Oats that come in a packet with flavors already in it. I immediately thought of your pineapple, but I’d like to find strawberry, berry, etc.
