I love slightly sweet, slightly tangy Tonkatsu Sauce, but it can be a little hard to find, depending on where you live. Of course, there’s always Amazon, lol, but boy do I have to try to stay away from there if you know what I mean. My cupboards would be bursting, my bank account empty!
If you haven’t had Tonkatsu sauce, some describe it as a kind of Japanese barbecue or Worcestershire sauce. It’s deep umami flavor won me over.
Now some versions start entirely from scratch, cararmelizing all kinds of veggies, and I’m sure they’re out of this world fantastic. I didn’t have the time for a “project” so came up with a quickie version – a bit of a cheat but oh, so good!
Drizzle this over Tonkatsu, a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet, or find your own use for it as a dipping sauce. Use it anywhere you might use a barbecue, sauce, too.
I used it last week when I made Grilled Vegetables to go with a Teriyaki Marinated Steak. Feel free to fiddle a bit and adjust this to your taste; the Coleman’s mustard powder is nice in here for just a bit of zip. Enjoy!
